Subject: Improper Shutdown in
Windows
Products Affected: GEMLink and
GC-Connect
Windows 95/98/NT does not do well if it is shutdown
improperly. Improper shutdowns can result in file
corruption leading to possibly serious problems with the
operation of your programs, including GEMLink &
GC-Connect..
The use of a UPS (an uninterruptible power supply) will go a
long way toward preventing improper Windows shutdowns, and file
corruption problems in general. If you expect to
experience long outages, you may want to consider a 'smart' UPS
that can monitor its own batteries and shutdown Windows
automatically before the batteries give out. If the
batteries lose power before the electricity is restored, an
improper shutdown will occur despite having a UPS.
An example of a smart UPS we have tested with our programs is
the APC (American Power Conversion) Back UPS Pro that comes with
'Power Chute' software to monitor the UPS performance and perform
the shutdown. Other manufacturers make products with
similar features.
How DO you shutdown Windows properly? Go to the
'Start' button, then to 'Shut Down...' then click the
'Shut Down' selection, then click 'OK'. Windows will then
rewrite all of the necessary system files and prompt you when it
is safe to turn the power off to the computer.
